Season Six of Private Practice, the final season, initally aired on September 25, 2012 with the premiere episode on ABC and is set to end on January 22, 2013 with the series finale. The season comprised of 13 episodes.


The sixth season saw the continuation of Addison's occupation at Seaside Wellness alongside Cooper, Charlotte, Violet, Jake, Sheldon and Amelia.

The cast of season six, Gluck excluded

The season featured 9 actors credited in a starring capacity. All of the fifth season actors returned with the exception of Tim Daly who left the cast after the fifth season finale. Daly's made no appearances in the sixth season but his character Pete's death was revealed at the end of the premiere.

Walsh, Bratt, Adelstein, Strickland, Benben, Scorsone, Diggs and Brenneman appear in all 10 currently aired sixth season episodes

Guest CastEdit

The sixth season introduced Matt Long as James Peterson, an ER doctor who replaces Pete after his death and serves as a love interest for Amelia. Former series star Audra McDonald is also returned as Naomi for the season finale.

Plot: As Addison settles into her new life having made a decision between Jake and Sam, she struggles with her insecurities while Violet begins to fear the worst when Pete doesn't show up to his preliminary court hearing and she grows concerned that he has run away from his problems. Meanwhile, Amelia celebrates a year of sobriety while Sheldon enjoys his newly reconciled relationship with his ex-wife, Laura. Elsewhere, Charlotte swears Cooper to secrecy when she receives shocking news.

Mourning Sickness

Plot: At Pete's request, the doctors congregate at Addison's house to celebrate his life but Violet struggles to hold it together in the wake of his death. Meanwhile, Violet asks Cooper to care for Lucas if something should happen to her, putting more strain on Charlotte as she tries to adjust to her pregnancy, while Addison receives a phone call that delivers her heartbreaking news. Elsewhere, Sheldon treats a suicidal patient and is stunned by his dramatic declaration.

Good Grief

Plot: Having finally moved out of her house, Violet returns to work while trying to get Lucas to understand that Pete isn't coming home, but a patient's dramatic deceleration challenges her to maintain her composure. Addison attempts to hide her grief over Mark Sloan's death, and worries what consequences exposing her past to Jake will have while Charlotte runs herself into the ground trying to man the E.R in Pete's absence, concerning Cooper who continues to try and get her to feel joyous about their pregnancy. Meanwhile, Sam tries to get Sheldon to face the reality of his situation.

You Don't Know What You've Got 'Til It's Gone

Plot: A rainy day brings about a hectic night in the E.R and the doctors come together when Cooper's young patient goes missing from the hospital, causing Sheldon to fear the worst about his patient's possible involvement. Elsewhere, Addison and Jake find themselves at odds regarding one of Jake's cases, while Addison inadvertently lands Sam in hot water with his girlfriend when she exposes the truth about their past. Meanwhile, Violet staff must deal with the arrival of James Peterson - the new E.R attending, and Pete's replacement who also butts heads with Amelia.

Plot: Sam is followed by a camera crew as they shoot a pilot for a reality TV series revolving around his life, but the cameras catch him during a personal crisis when his mother arrives in town with her ailing boss, which exposes Sam to an unexpected family secret which changes Sam's perspectives of his childhood. Meanwhile, Addison deals with the awkwardness between herself and Sam's mother in the wake of their break up while Violet, Cooper and James continue to lead the search for the missing girl, using Sam's camera crew to try and bring their search to a national audience.

Apron Strings

Plot: Addison faces personal and professional complications that begin when Henry's biological mother expresses an interest in being part of her son's life after eight months of no contact. Addison's struggle with Henry's mother is intensified when Addison's mentor arrives arrives in the E.R and she is hit with a lawsuit from mother of a special needs child suing her for wrongful birth; all of which make Addison re-evaluate her role as a parent. Elsewhere, Cooper is forced to deal with his decision not to find his birth parents when Mason begins asking questions.

The World According To Jake

Plot: Things grow complex between Jake and Addison after he doesn't respond to her proposal, and the complexity grows when Jake begins to worry that an incident from his past will interfere with their upcoming visit from the social worker. Addison's proposal, and Jake's daughter's return with her much older boyfriend, has Jake questioning his ability to let go of his dead wife and move on with Addison. Elsewhere, James continues to pursue a reluctant Amelia and Violet councils the parents of the missing girl as they face the dilemma of trying to return their lives to normalcy.

Life Support

Plot: Cooper prepares for the arrival of the triplets but he and Charlotte continue to have conflicting opinions on just about everything concerning her pregnancy, especially the decision of whether or not to reduce the pregnancies to make it a safer pregnancy. However, when Charlotte goes into early labour, Addison, Jake and Sam must come together to try and make sure the triplets and mother come through while Cooper worries about the fate of his children. Elsewhere, Violet tries to help her friends from her grief group deal with turning the love of her life off of life support.

I'm Fine

Plot: As the case of the missing young girl begins to loose steam, Sheldon begins to suspect the worst about his patient which forces him to put everything on the line to try and discover the truth, and save the young girl's life, while Violet continues to council the parents. The case also makes Sheldon reflect on his own life, as he slowly begins to accept his prostate cancer diagnosis with the help of a fellow sufferer although Sheldon still struggles to reveal his diagnosis to the other doctors. Elsewhere, news of Addison and Jake's engagement spreads around the practice.

Georgia On My Mind

Plot: Charlotte deals with being stuck on bed rest, ordered to help preserve the pregnancy of two of her triplets, and deals with trying to run the hospital from her bed while also driving the hospital staff crazy as a very demanding patient. Meanwhile, she and Cooper struggle to find a name for their premature daughter, something Charlotte can't do until she finally meets her while, concerned about Charlotte's hospitalization, Mason begins acting out at school. Elsewhere, Charlotte's situation brings Sam face to face with her private nurse, his ex-girlfriend Stephanie.

Good Fries Are Hard To Come By

Plot: As Amelia enters her second year of sobriety, she moves into a new apartment and continues her attempts to put her life back on track . However, after a series of terrible blind dates organized by Addison, Violet and Charlotte Amelia begins to question if she deserves to find someone. However, her blossoming spark with James soon turns into something more, finally giving Amelia someone worth investing in. Over the course of the next four months, James and Amelia's relationship develops but discovers about each other, and Amelia's lingering memories of Ryan, call their future into question. Meanwhile, Violet questions her own romantic future in the face of losing her husband.

Plot: Cooper's attempts to land the perfect dream house for his ever expanding family is interrupted when Charlotte goes into labour and the doctor's rally around her to support her during her time of need. Addison's hearing about gaining full custody of Henry approaches, but issues arise when the judge has misgivings about Jake's history, while Charlotte's situation forces Amelia to reflect on her past, and future, as a mother. Sam's second attempt at a relationship with Stephanie gets off to a fruitful start while Violet finds herself in crisis after she finds herself adapting to life after Pete.

Plot: The end of an era dawns as Addison's wedding to Jake brings about new chapters in the lives of Seaside Wellness' doctors. As Addison adjusts to her second chance at married life, Jake tries to find peace with his daughter's decisions. Elsewhere, an encounter at the wedding brings Sam and Naomi on a collision course while Cooper and Charlotte deal with the pressures of parenthood. As Amelia grows closer to her new beau, Sheldon makes a big decision after his own love affair takes an expected, but tragic, turn while Violet begins work on a new project close to her heart.
